Car Windows Potentially Unsafe
Car Windows Potentially Unsafe Photo Via: http://kenrobertsautoglass.com Your carâs windshield may be doing an okay job at blocking the son, but itâs probably not protecting you against any of the sunâs harmful rays. In fact, a recent study suggests that itâs important for drivers to protect against these rays, and to stop assuming that just because they are behind a windshield, they are safe. The study recommends that drivers wear sunglasses, sunscreen and utilize any other protection against the sun while driving in order to protect yourself from the sun, just as you would at the beach. According to the study, ultraviolet radiation emitted from the sun isnât actually being blocked by your windshield, and your windows arenât much better. In fact, some of the rays (tied to problems such as cataracts and skin aging) arenât protected against at all. According to Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, a researcher from the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute in Beverly Hills, California, in a statement to Reuters Health, âSome cars were as low as 50 percent blockage. Even cars that came with factory tint, there was no guarantee that would protect against UV rays.â For those not as familiar with UV rays, they may not be the most abundant of the sunâs rays, but they are extremely damaging to human skin. And according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV-A rays âare the most common and penetrate most deeply.â And now, driving a car is linked to these harmful rays. According to Boxer Wachler, as written in JAMA Ophthalmology, âBecause drivers in the U.S. have their left side exposed to sunlight, UV rays have been blamed for the increased number of cataracts and skin cancers that occur on the left side.â So evidence would suggest that these rays are having an effect on drivers. Why is this? Rays are so powerful they can easily pass through clouds, which means they can easily pass through glass as well. So how do you know if your windows are safe or not? Getty Boxer Wachler had the same question. He used a UV-A light meter to test 29 different cars at a car dealership on a cloudless day in May of 2014. These 29 cars came from 15 different manufacturers all made between the years 1990 and 2014. The results were as follows: âOn average, car windshields blocked about 96 percent of UV-A rays. The protection afforded by individual cars ranged from 95 to 98 percent.â Side doors, however, had a different result. âThe percentage of UV-A rays blocked varied from 44 percent to 96 percent. Only four of the 29 cars had windows that blocked more than 90 percent of UV-A rays.â So while windshields offer a decent level of protection against the sunâs rays, side door windows offer very little protection, putting the driver at risk. According to Boxer Wachler, âIt had no correlation at all with the cost of the car, high-end car or low-end car.â Dr. Jayne Weiss, a commentator on the study and director at the Louisiana State University Eye Center of Excellence, clarifies this problem by explaining that windshields have to be more protective than the door windows because theyâre made of a different material (laminated glass as opposed to the door windowsâ tempered glass) in order to prevent shattering. She says, âDonât assume because you are in an automobile and the window is closed that youâre protected from UV light. For the eyes, your best bet is to get sunglasses that block UV-A and UV-B light and wrap around the face.â pexels.com And on the other side of things, Dr. Paul Nghiem, a head dermatologist at the University of Washington not involved in this study, claims that car windows allow in enough rays to have an effect on the skin as well. He says, âWearing long-sleeved clothing, or sunscreen that is broad spectrum, would be extremely effective and seems indicated on long drives on sunny days.â As an added tip, Boxer Wachler suggests drivers obtain clear UV filters, which can be added to their car filters to protect against the damaging, UV rays. So if you care about your skin and your overall health, avoiding the tanning bed is no longer enough; you need to actively protect yourself from the sun, even in situations you otherwise wouldnât be concerned about, such as driving your car to and from school or work five days a week. Using sunscreen before driving to work? It may sound crazy, but this study shows it may also be necessary. So whether or not you take these problems seriously now, itâs about time to reconsider how you feel about the problem at hand, especially as weather changes become far more extreme all over the country. So at the very least, be aware of the problem and do what you can to avoid future health problems while you still can.

Encourage children to read for fun - Tutor Hunt Blog
Encourage children to read for fun Encourage children to read for fun, and they will become their own teachers Encourage children to read for fun, and they will become their own teachersSchoolsThe importance of reading to a child is of course known to all - parents are encouraged to read to their young children during their time at nursery and their first few years of primary school. Teachers will read stories to their pupils during special designated sessions. What isn`t so well known are the techniques to ensure a child learns to enjoy reading themselves. If a child`s love of reading can be engendered, they will pick up books themselves, and find their own path through the world of literature. A little know report conducted by the Department for Education back in 2012 highlighted the importance of children developing a love of reading. Entitled `Research evidence on reading for pleasure,` the report reached a number of conclusions as to how pupils could be encouraged to enjoy reading for themselves: 1 Teachers should be proactive in helping pupils choose what books to take home. Assuming a teacher knows what particular interests a pupil has, they should be able to judge what books they will most enjoy. Of course this doesn`t mean pushing a book about adventure stories into a child`s hands, because the child has expressed an interest in adventures. The teacher will need to give an exciting synopsis of the book - they will need to be able to spark an interest in the story, so the pupil will be enthusiastic, and will want to take it home and read it themselves. The teacher will need to have a good knowledge about the library of books available for the pupil`s age group, so they will be able to select one that accords with their interests. 2 make story time in a class room a special event. Children first learn to love reading by being read to - long before a child can read for themselves they will be receptive to stories told by others. If a teacher can make `story time` in class an exciting event, then pupils will want to repeat this themselves, and so will be encouraged to seek out books in their own time. A good story teller will have an engaging delivery, and might even put on different voices for different characters in their story. They don`t have to be a Peter Ustinov, a genius in portraying different characters. Just a basic attempt at this will be enough, for children already have enough imagination. 3 Open children`s eyes to the world of different books out there. Many children might not be aware as to the limitless array of stories waiting to be read. Let them know there are stories about dragons and princesses, as well as super heroes, taking animals - anything they can think of. A teacher could compile a list of extravagant characters from different books, such as the eponymous `Fantastic Mr. Fox` of Roald Dahl, and The Dragon Smaug from Tolkien`s The Hobbit. By listing a broad range of diverse characters they will be sure to engage the interest of their pupils. 4 talk to children about what they are reading. Reading is of course a solitary act - just with yourself and a book you can lose yourself in your imagination, being guided by the author to create a whole world full of characters. By talking to children about the books they are reading, you will give them a chance to express their interest, to talk about the adventures their favorite characters are having. Engaging with an adult regarding their literary pursuits will only encourage their love of reading. A survey commissioned by bookseller Book People back in 2017 found that one in five parts do not spend any time reading with their children, and that more than half of the parents who did read with their children spent less than an hour a week doing so. With children spending many many hours a week on tablets, phones, computer games and the television, it is a shame that the tradition printed page seems to be falling behind modern technologies. 8 months ago0Add a Comment
The Power of Pinterest How Pinning Can Help Your Child Succeed
The Power of Pinterest How Pinning Can Help Your Child Succeed Many people associate Pinterest with crafts, fashion and DIY projects but did you know that it has become teachers' best kept secret? In a previous life, I taught elementary school in a low-income neighborhood and unfortunately, the budget for classroom resources was non-existent. It was my responsibility to purchase and create any resources that were utilized by my students. Initially, this was a daunting thought but after exploring the internet for hours, I stumbled upon Pinterest. Maybe I was a bit behind the times but previously, I had had very little experience with this online vision board website. After a few quick searches for topics like Common Core, reading comprehension and problem solving activities, I realized that Pinterest was the answer to all of my questions. The benefit of Pinterest is that it is a compilation of thousands of teacher resources from around the world. Every teacher has their own style and their own areas of expertise and by sharing resources, you are not only bettering yourself as a professional but also, you could stumble across the activity, worksheet, song, video, etc that you've desperately been needing. Personally, I utilized Pinterest to create centers and guiding reading activities. Activities that students could work on individually, in pairs or in small groups. Additionally, it became my go-to when looking for activities to help my students that were either below or above grade level. So how does all of this relate to you as a parent? That's easy; just like a teacher, you too can utilize these resources to help your child succeed. Maybe your son or daughter needs remediation in math or maybe your child is performing above grade level and you are looking for enrichment activities. Any and all of these things are right at your fingertips. Below are a couple of my favorite pins: 1. State Capital Video: I loved this video for several reasons. First off, it was a great visual representation of the states because it provided pictures of what made each state special. The song lyrics were not only catchy but also appealed to my students, who were auditory learners. They enjoyed the beat and without realizing it quickly found themselves singing along and learning their state capitals. 2. Problem Solving Work Mat: This resource seems really simple and straightforward but it was really helpful with my struggling math students. It helped them verbalize the steps of the problem solving process and visualize what they needed to do next. For students that were still in the concrete stage, I would use manipulative to model the problems and have them record each step on their mat. 3. Oreo Phases of the Moon: Not only was this a great visual representation of the moon's phases but also it was a great snack time activity! 4. Paint Chip Contractions: I loved this resource because it visually represented what happens when you make a contraction. Students were able to manipulate the paint chips and see how the two words become one and vice versa. Plus, this resource is FREE. You just go down to your local hardware store and pick up some paint chips and then write on them. Viola! Instant reading resource. 5. Grammaropolis: To say that I love this website is an understatement. It was my job to develop our English and Language Arts lesson plans and these mainly were related to parts of speech. As you can probably guess, the parts of speech are not very interesting to 8 year olds...well that was until I found Grammarpolis! My students loved the videos and the action verb video was their favorite. So next time you need a good rainy day project, a remediation or enrichment activity, or ideas on how to help your child stay on track during the summer, check out Pinterest. I promise, you'll be hooked!
